Hello New York, New York!
It’s May Day and New York showed up! Just like I knew you would because you are amazing and dedicated and everyone knows how strong New Yorkers are!
The Guardian covered several rallies including in NYC where they spoke to Lydia, our incredible NY state newsletter partner :
Lydia Howrilka, a 25-year-old librarian from Queens, was holding a “only you can stop fascism” sign. “I am standing in solidarity with my immigrant brothers and sisters in New York. I am standing in defense of democracy,” Howrilka said.
Hopefully you are energized because there’s more to do! Here are some weekend events and actions that are varied and are happening everywhere, in every corner of our fair state, all at once. It’s a delight to see!
State Level Actions and Events
Join fellow climate volunteers as we lobby to support the NY HEAT Act and other important climate bills! Virtual meetings with local legislators are set up for Monday, May 5th at 10am and 1:30pm and Monday, May 13th at 11am. To be connected with this opportunity or to learn more, click here!
Use the toolkit from the Alliance to Protect Kalief’s Law to tell your NYS electeds to reject Hochul’s attempts to undermine our discovery laws, which would hide evidence from the accused and lead to more wrongful convictions.
Use NYCLU's one-click tool to tell your NYS electeds to reject Hochul’s mask ban proposal, which would undermine our First Amendment rights and public health, making us all less safe.
Use this one-click tool from NY Renews to tell them to reject Hochul’s scheme to delay NY’s Clean Truck Rule, which is already a modest phased-in standard for truck manufacturers that encourages cleaner options than the diesel-guzzling trucks polluting our neighborhoods and making us sick.
Finally, use WFP's one-click tool to demand that NYS tax the rich and support working families, including immigrant NYers. (Credit: Indivisible Brooklyn)
